On Saturday, 11th April 2026, the Nigeria Community Sunderland CIC successfully hosted another impactful edition of its Health & Wellness Series, focusing on the important topic: “Understanding Stroke Risk: The Role of Stress, Hypertension & Diabetes.”
The virtual webinar brought together members of the community, healthcare professionals, and participants from different backgrounds to discuss one of the growing public health concerns affecting many individuals and families today. The session aimed to increase awareness, encourage prevention, and promote healthier lifestyles within the community.
The event was hosted by Opeyemi Adebowale, a Registered Nurse with STSFT, who guided participants through an engaging and informative discussion around the causes, warning signs, and prevention of stroke. She highlighted how unmanaged stress, high blood pressure, and diabetes significantly increase the risk of stroke, especially when early symptoms are ignored or lifestyle choices are neglected.
Guest speaker Dr. Adeniji Lawal, General Practitioner, delivered an insightful presentation explaining the medical relationship between hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. He stressed the importance of regular health checks, medication compliance, healthy eating, exercise, stress management, and early medical intervention. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions and receive practical advice on maintaining long-term health and wellbeing.
One of the key takeaways from the webinar was the importance of awareness and prevention. The session reminded attendees that many stroke-related complications can be reduced through education, healthier living, and timely medical care.
The webinar further reflected the Nigeria Community Sunderland CIC’s commitment to promoting health education, community wellbeing, and access to reliable healthcare information for Nigerians and the wider community in Sunderland and beyond.
The organisation expressed appreciation to the host, guest speaker, volunteers, and all participants who contributed to making the event successful and impactful.
Through initiatives like the Health & Wellness Series, the Nigeria Community Sunderland CIC continues to encourage the community to Learn, Prevent, and Protect while building a healthier and more informed society.
